The multi-line agent, the backbone of selling through retail outlets.
A brand turning over €1m to €20m that sells through pharmacies, organic shops or concept stores can almost never afford a national salaried sales force. Real coverage of the French field rests on independent sales agents: professionals who carry three to eight complementary product lines, have known their retail outlets for years, and are paid commission on what they sell.
The question is not whether these agents exist — there are thousands of them — but how to find them in the right place. Recruiting a sales agent comes down to matching portfolios: the one who already visits the pharmacies in your area, on your distribution channel, with compatible product lines. That is exactly the data this directory organises, department by department and vertical by vertical.
To understand the job and its legal statuses — agent commercial (self-employed sales agent), multi-line VRP (voyageur, représentant, placier: a salaried travelling sales representative), pay and end-of-contract compensation — read our pharmaceutical sales rep job profile and our guide to planning a sales route.
Frequently askedquestions.
- What is an independent multi-line sales agent?
- An independent multi-line sales agent is a self-employed sales professional who represents several non-competing brands across the same territory. Paid on commission on the sales they generate, they own their portfolio of retail outlets — pharmacies, parapharmacies, specialist shops — and present there the ranges of the brands they have chosen to carry. For a brand, it is a way to be present in the field without putting a sales force on the payroll.
- How do I find a sales agent to distribute my brand?
- Three channels dominate: referrals from other brands in the sector, the professional federations of sales agents, and directories organised by distribution channel. The decisive criterion is not how many agents you contact but how closely their actual portfolio — channel, territory, type of retail outlet — matches yours. An agent who already visits the pharmacies in your target area gives you access immediately; a generalist profile will have to build it.
- How much does an independent multi-line sales agent cost?
- A multi-line agent is paid on commission, generally between 10 and 20% of the revenue generated excl. VAT depending on the sector, the brand's reputation and the scope of the assignment (order taking alone, or also merchandising and training shop teams). There is no fixed salary and no employer contributions for the brand, but the French agent commercial status opens a right to end-of-contract compensation, usually equivalent to two years of commission.
- What is the difference between a sales agent and a multi-line VRP?
- The agent commercial is a registered self-employed professional who acts in the brand's name under a mandate, with the status set out in the French Code de commerce (commercial code). The multi-line VRP (voyageur, représentant, placier) is an employee — often of several employers at once — protected by the mandatory statute of travelling sales representatives, with social contributions and a relationship of subordination. Choosing between the two commits you to a social security regime, and to how the contract ends and what that costs: it deserves legal advice before signing.
- How do I join the Salesia agent directory?
- Joining is free, through the form on this page: give your departments, your distribution channels and the kinds of ranges you carry. The directory is built both from these sign-ups and from profiles listed by our team; either way, no introduction takes place without a prior conversation with you and your consent.
- Does the directory publish my contact details?
- No. The public map shows only data aggregated by department and, at most, a first name. Contact details and the full profile are never published: the introduction to a brand goes through Salesia, once you have agreed to it case by case.
